Since 2018, the group hosts students of the last years of secondary schools for the internship program "alternanza scuola-lavoro”. The students work on specific activities aimed to increase their theoretical and practical knowledge on the laboratory and research practice.
Project: Purification and structural characterization of a metallo-protein
Project description: Training and vocational guidance activities by coaching the student in the experimental laboratory procedures to isolate a metallo-protein, to biophysically characterize it and to determine its structural model with biocomputational activity.
Aims: Achievements of general and basic knowledge on protocols of expression and purification of recombinant proteins and for the use of software to model protein structure.
Planned activities: Experimental work to acquire knowledge on i) molecular biology for gene cloning, ii) microbiology to express a recombinant protein in bacteria, iii) liquid chromatography to separate and isolate the protein of interest, iv) protein quantification and analysis of the purity, v) homology modeling of protein structures, vi) computational techniques to structurally characterize the molecules of interest.
Essential preconditions: Lab safety training to be performed in the lab at the beginning of the training experience.
Number of students: 1-2
Hours: 80 for a single student; 40 for two students
Period: June-July
Tutors: Prof. Barbara Zambelli (experimental lab activities), Prof. Francesco Musiani (bio-computational lab activities).
