Stefano Ciurli received a Laurea cum laude in Chemistry from the University of Pisa in 1986, with a thesis supervised by Prof. C. Floriani at the Department of Chemistry of Columbia University (New York, USA). He then received a Ph.D. degree in Inorganic Chemistry from Harvard University (Cambridge, MA, USA) in 1990 with Prof. R. H. Holm. After two years of postdoctoral studies with Prof. Bertini and Prof. Luchinat, he started his independent career at the University of Bologna in 1992, as Associate Professor. He became Full Professor of General and Inorganic Chemistry in 2001.

Francesco Musiani graduated in Chemistry at the University of Bologna in 1998 under the supervision of Prof. Bernardi. He carried out research activity at the Department of Chemistry of Florence University from 2000 to 2003, where he received his Ph.D. degree in Chemistry under the supervision of Prof. Bertini. During the Ph.D. he was guest of Prof. Carloni at the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA/ISAS) of Trieste (Italy). Post-doctoral work from 2003 to 2016 was done in collaboration with Prof. Ciurli (University of Bologna), Prof. Micheletti (SISSA/ISAS, Trieste, Italy) and Prof. Samorì (University of Bologna). From March 2012 to March 2013, Francesco Musiani was guest of Prof. Carloni at the German Research School for Simulation Sciences GmbH (Jülich, Germany). From 2016 to 2019 he was Fixed-term Senior Assistant Professor at the University of Bologna. From October 2019 he is Associate Professor in General and Inorganic Chemistry at the Department of Pharmacy and Biotechnology of the University of Bologna.

Barbara Zambelli

Barbara Zambelli graduated cum laude in Biotechnology in 2002 at the University of Bologna. She received the Ph.D. degree in Functional Biology of Cellular and Molecular Systems from the University of Bologna in 2006 with a project on nickel-chaperones of bacterial urease, under the supervision of Prof. Stefano Ciurli.  As a Ph.D. student, she spent a period of three months working at the Department of Biochemistry, University of Gent (Belgium), under the supervision of Prof. Jozef Van Beeumen. In 2005 she was awarded an EMBO Short Term Fellowship, to visit the EMBL of Hamburg, working under the supervision of Dr. Paul Tucker. From 2006 to 2008 she carried out a post-doctoral work at the University of Bologna. From November 2008 to December 2021, she was Assistant Professor in General and Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Bologna. From December 2021, she is Associate Professor in General and Inorganic Chemistry at the Department of Pharmacy and Biotechnology of the University of Bologna.

Luca Mazzei

Luca Mazzei received a MSc degree cum laude in Molecular and Industrial Biotechnology from the University of Bologna in 2012, with a thesis supervised by Prof. Stefano Ciurli. After a two-years (2012-2013) research fellowship, he was enrolled in a three-years Ph.D. program in Cellular and Molecular Biology at the University of Bologna, receiving a Ph.D. degree in 2017. From 2017 to 2021 he worked as a Post-doc researcher at the University of Bologna, under the supervision of Prof. Stefano Ciurli. Luca Mazzei is currently a Junior assistant professor (fixed-term) at the University of Bologna, focusing his research on the investigation of the structure-function relationships of metallo-proteins involved in human pathogenesis and agro-environmental issues.

Arundhati Paul

Arundhati Paul obtained her M.Sc. degree in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology at the University of Bologna in 2022 with a thesis work in pharmacological inhibition of oncogenic ALK in Colorectal cancer, under the supervision of Dr. Lauriola at the Unit of Histology, Embryology & Applied Biology. She also received her B.Sc. (Hons.) in Biotechnology from Adamas University, India, in 2018 with a final year project in forensic bloodstains’ age determination from the RER between blood-specific miRNA markers. In 2017, she was a recipient of Indian Academy of Sciences Summer Research Fellowship and under this, worked at National Institute of Immunology, studying the effects on longevity in C. elegans under dietary restricted conditions. Her current work is focused on analytical characterization of bacterial and plant ureases along with its structure-function relationship study to elicit novel inhibitors.

Simone Albani obtained his M.Sc. degree in Molecular and Industrial Biotechnology at the University of Bologna in 2020 with a thesis on the inhibition of the AmsI Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase from the Apple Pathogen Erwinia amylovora, under the supervision of Prof. Musiani.  From 2020 to 2023 he was a Ph.D. student at INM-9 Forschungszentrum Jülich and Faculty I, RWTH Aachen, Germany under the supervision of Prof. Rossetti. His current work is focused on the modelling of protein-protein interactions in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Laura Rigobello graduated in 2022 in Industrial and Molecular Biotechnology at University of Bologna with a final evaluation of 110 cum laude and under the supervision of Prof. Francesco Musiani. She started the PhD programme in Data Science and Computation in November 2022 in collaboration with CINECA consortium. Her research project is focused on structure-function relationship of pathogenic mutations in human complex I of the respiratory chain.

Giorgia Frumenzio got her master’s degree in Molecular Biology at the University of Parma in October 2019 with a thesis supervised by Prof. Pietro Cozzini. After spending a period at Computational Biology and drug design laboratory at the University of Barcelona, she worked in the European project Exscalate4cov, focused on identify new potential drugs against SARS-Cov2. Since October 2021, she works at CINECA as HPC Scientific Application Engineer. She started the PhD programme in Data Science and Computation in November 2022. Her research project is focused on the study of metal ion trafficking within protein supercomplexes and force field optimization, using HPC solvers and machine learning algorithms.

Claudio Pino graduated in 2021 in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology at the University of Bologna with a thesis entitled "Study of the bifidogenic activity of Lactobacillus spp. isolated from pregnant women", which was evaluated with the highest grade. After graduation, he took part in a 6-month post-graduate internship in Medical Genetics at the Sant'Orsola-Malpighi Hospital for the identification of new anticancer therapies. Then, he moved to Prof. Musiani laboratory to study the computational method of analysis in the same field. Eventually, he started a Ph.D. programme in Cellular and Molecular Biology under the supervision of Prof. Francesco Musiani with a project focused on the development of a multidirectional approach for drug repurposing using HPC solvers.

Noemi Carosella

Noemi Carosella graduated in 2019 in Biotechnology at the University of Teramo under the supervision of Prof. Barbara Barboni. She worked in physiology lab focused on developing biotechnical tools for mammal reproduction. In 2022 she graduated in Industrial and Molecular Biotechnology at the University of Bologna under the supervision of Prof. Barbara Zambelli. Her thesis project was focused on the interactions between urease and one of its accessory proteins and on the validation of theoretical data obtained by evolutionary coupling. In 2023 she was a research fellow at the Laboratory of Bioinorganic Chemistry under the supervision of Prof. Barbara Zambelli. She started her PhD in Cellular and Molecular Biology in November 2023 under the supervision of Prof. Barbara Zambelli. Her research project is on the biophysical characterization of the intrinsically disordered region of NDRG1, a protein involved in Ni-induced carcinogenesis.
