B-PLAS DEMO Learning Event was held in Faenza at the headquarter of CAVIRO EXTRA with the participation of the European partners AIJU and Pannon Pro Innovations.
A great audience of academics and company representatives witnessed the presentation of the first B-PLAS pilot plant for the production of PHAs (Polyhydroxyalkanoates), a biodegradable bioplastic obtainable from food waste and sludge from the agri-food supply chain. The plant is funded by EIT Climate-KIC, the European community working to accelerate the transition to a zero-carbon economy.
B-PLAS DEMO, which will be soon operative for the testing phase, aims to produce PHAs using the residual carbon contained in the sludge deriving from public and private treatment plants. Thanks to a series of simple, reliable and cost-effective technologies, this special biodegradable plastic can be used for packaging, disposable items, 3D printing and much more. “Even though the bioplastic has a very high price – says Cristian Torri, project coordinator – the edge of this technology is to reduce the production costs using waste materials”.
Nowadays, the cheapest bioplastic spool costs more than 30€/Kg and pellets cost over 4€/Kg: this new technology allows to obtain PHAs at extremely competitive prices. “One more possibility – concludes Cristian Torri – is to produce bioplastic items in your own home thanks to the support of 3D printing sector”.
