List of all the Presidents of the Academy of Sciences of Bologna Institute.
The Presidents and Vice-Presidents of the Academy are listed staring from 1714, the year of the official inauguration of the Institute of Sciences which the Academy was part of. The list here reported is partly taken from the book by Giovan Battista Ercolani “L'Accademia delle Scienze dell'Istituto di Bologna, dalle sue origini a tutto il 1880”, Zanichelli , Bologna 1881. (the Academy of Sciences of the Bologna Institute, from its origin until 1880). Ercolani wrote up the list in the ’80 of the 19thcentury, the first part covers the timespan from 1714 to 1804, the year of the Napoleonic suppression. Then there is a gap until 1829-- the year in which the Pope re-established the Academy—when the second part of the list starts again up to the present days. For the names in the 1829-1986 period, reference is made to the list of appointments drawn up by the Academy Chancellor, Carlo Forni, and published in the Annuario dell’Accademia delle Scienze dell’Istitutodi Bologna, 1989 edition (Academy yearbook). The data of the last thirty years are those recorded in the minutes of the Academy Board meetings. It is worth noting that, in the 18th century the President term of office was annual, but it was renewable and, as a matter of fact some of the Presidents were re-elected several times, often alternating the two positions of President and Vice-President. In the 19th century the annual term of office was maintained until 1885, without limits to the possibility of re-election, and also in this period many Presidents were renewed several times uninterruptedly. These long presidencies of the 18th century but above all of the 19th century exerted a strong influence on the scientific life of the Academy, giving rise to a remarkable continuity of research and strategic guidance. After 1885, with the change to triennial presidency, the re-election practice became uncommon, even if with some exceptions. The distinguishing characteristic of the Academy Presidents and Vice-Presidents over time is the high scientific quality of the elected, who are almost all great Masters of the Studio Bolognese from the 19th century up to the present days.
