Demographic Resilience and Vulnerability
Depopulation and Transformations in Mountain Areas: Between Decline and Possible Revival

This event aims to foster a reflection on the demographic dynamics affecting the mountainous and hilly areas of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. Drawing on data concerning depopulation, population ageing, and changes in family structures, the discussion will address the main economic and social vulnerabilities, as well as the conditions that may foster resilience and repopulation processes. A dialogue to rethink the future of today’s most vulnerable territories.

The event will take place on Wednesday, May 28 at 4:00 PM, at the Department of Statistical Sciences of the University of Bologna, Via Belle Arti 41.

Speakers:

  • Marco Breschi, Professor of Demography at the University of Sassari and Mayor of Sambuca Pistoiese, co-editor (with M. Ferrari and G. Ruiu) of L’Italia dimenticata (“Forgotten Italy”), Forum Editrice, 2024.

  • Gianluigi Bovini, demographer and statistician, former Director of the Planning, Control and Statistics Department of the Municipality of Bologna, co-author (with F. Chiarini) of Sette montagne, otto colline e una pianura. Riabitare i territori fragili emiliani e romagnoli è possibile? (“Seven Mountains, Eight Hills and One Plain: Is It Possible to Re-inhabit the Fragile Territories of Emilia-Romagna?”), Pendragon, 2025.

At the end of the event, the winners of the Data4Resilience Data Challenge will be awarded.
