Una Masterclass - Global debates on datafication and AI: theory, methods, politics - 4 to 8 September, Kraków

Una Masterclasses are a few days meetings with world-leading scientists, entrepreneurs, science managers, and opinion-makers to discuss a selected, vital problem falling within the thematic scope of the project.

The seventh Una Masterclass workshop for PhD students will be held under DIGITALIZED! Society in the Era of Digital Revolution project by Prof. Matti Pohjonen, University Researcher at the Helsinki Institute of Social Sciences (HSSH), University of Helsinki, specialising in developing new digital methods using open social media/internet data for social sciences and humanities research.

The exponential growth of digital data has radically impacted not only how we understand key cultural, political, and social phenomena, but also how research is conducted and how knowledge about society itself is produced from new data sources available at a new grand scale. This workshop will introduce students to this double nature of datafication and AI as both an object of study and method. Key critical debates will include those on data colonialism, platform economy, critical data studies, surveillance, extreme speech algorithmic governance, AI bias, extreme speech social media content moderation. Following the debates, the workshop will provide hands-on examples of new data tools, methods and approaches as well as ethical and philosophical issues.
