Una Europa Summer School in Veterinary Public Health (Meat Hygiene) || 26-30 June 2023 || Department of Veterinary Medical Sciences - Ozzano dell'Emilia (BO)
From 26 to 30 June, the Department of Veterinary Medical Sciences of the University of Bologna hosted the Una Europa Summer School in Veterinary Public Health (Meat Hygiene). Students and experts from across the Alliance and other European universities gathered in Bologna for a rich and intensive week programme.
The main aim of this Una Europa Summer School was to safely train, in a controlled environment, 20 veterinary students from 20 European countries to improve public health, animal health and welfare under a One Health umbrella.
This aim stems from the fact that veterinary surgeons working on farms and at food-processing establishments play a fundamental role in safeguarding public health, animal health, and animal welfare.
An essential part of the undergraduate training in Europe involves veterinary students undertaking placements within the food industry. Increasing exposure to practical training in inspection techniques of animals presented for slaughter contribute to the prevention of foodborne hazards entering the food chain, posing a risk to public health. For this reason, the Una Europa Summer School in Veterinary Public Health (Meat Hygiene) tried to combine a hands-on approach (visits and workshops) with an analytical one (reflection and assignment activities).
