PhD Impact Award Winner from Unibo: Angelica Giovagnoli

Angelica Giovagnoli, PhD candidate in Industrial Chemistry at the University of Bologna, has been selected among the winners of the Una Europa PhD Impact Award 2025 in the area of Future Materials and Technologies.  Her doctoral research, supervised by Professor Daniele Caretti, is conducted in collaboration with SACMI, an international industrial group active in the fields of advanced materials and manufacturing technologies, which also supports her doctoral scholarship.

The Una Europa PhD Impact Award recognises doctoral research that demonstrates a tangible contribution to society, the economy, the environment, health, education, culture, or policy. Promoted by the Una Europa alliance, which unites some of Europe’s leading universities, the award encourages young researchers to communicate the value of their work beyond academic boundaries. Participants are invited to describe, in clear and accessible language, how their research can address current global challenges. Winners are chosen by interdisciplinary juries and are given the opportunity to present their work during Berlin Science Week, one of Europe’s major events dedicated to science communication.

Giovagnoli’s winning project, “Smart materials, greener planet – cellulose can power next generation packaging,”investigates the potential of cellulose-based materials for sustainable packaging. Her research focuses on developing innovative, fully biodegradable solutions capable of replacing conventional plastics, combining high performance with environmental responsibility. The work contributes to advancing the circular economy and sustainable production processes within the chemical and materials industries.

Reflecting on her participation, Giovagnoli emphasised the importance of connecting research and society: “I deeply believe in the importance of sharing scientific research beyond academic circles. This competition challenged me to reflect not only on what I research and how I do it, but also on why it matters. It has renewed my commitment to conducting research that is not only rigorous, but also meaningful and socially engaged.

Her vision embodies the mission of Una Europa: building bridges between science and society through communication, dialogue, and collaboration. By presenting at Berlin Science Week, she will have the opportunity to reach an international audience of researchers, innovators, and citizens, sharing how materials science can contribute to a more sustainable future.

Giovagnoli’s recognition underscores the University of Bologna’s strong commitment to promoting research with social impact and international reach. Her success reflects a new generation of researchers capable of combining scientific excellence with responsibility towards the environment and the community.
