Research Data Manager, KU Leven
Naeem, a research data manager at KU Leuven, participated in the Live My Life program to exchange knowledge and experiences with colleagues from other universities and explore different approaches to data management. The experience proved to be highly enriching, allowing him to examine various strategies for data stewardship, strengthen opportunities for collaboration, and immerse himself in the vibrant academic atmosphere of Bologna.
For Naeem, the program was a valuable opportunity to observe how data management support is structured at other institutions. He explained, “I wanted to understand how my colleagues approach data stewardship and interact with researchers in providing support.”The University of Bologna, with its rich academic history, proved to be an ideal setting for this exchange.
During the week, Naeem had the chance to review Bologna’s data management support strategies and compare them to those at Leuven. “There are many similarities between our approaches, but also significant differences. It was very useful to reflect on what we might integrate into our own system.” He found the collaborative model between different departments particularly interesting, as it fosters more effective coordination. “At KU Leuven, we work more centrally, whereas here I saw a more dynamic interaction between research units and the data management team. That’s something I’d like to explore further.” The experience also helped him realize the importance of having a strong internal network. “I saw how constant communication between researchers, administrators, and support teams makes the process smoother. This is something I want to bring back with me.”
This was Naeem’s first job-shadowing experience, and he found it extremely rewarding. “I felt welcomed from the very first day. My peer, Giulia Caldoni, was very supportive, and her team integrated me quickly.”
Beyond the technical aspects, Naeem particularly valued the opportunity to engage with a colleague in a similar role.
In addition to the professional exchange, Naeem was captivated by the unique atmosphere of Bologna. “It’s a truly academic city, but with a surprisingly vibrant cultural scene.”
He particularly enjoyed the historic architecture of the University of Bologna, with its grand buildings and picturesque courtyards. “Walking down Via Zamboni and seeing the frescoes in the university’s hallways was an incredible experience. You can feel the history in every corner.”
Naeem’s enthusiasm for the Live My Life program highlights the value of international exchanges, not only for professional growth but also for cultural enrichment. His experience in Bologna provided him with new perspectives, valuable connections, and a clearer idea of how to enhance data management support at his own institution.
