Research Manager - University of Zurich
Miriam, a Research Manager from the University of Zurich, had the opportunity to participate in the Live My Life project, an initiative promoted by the University of Bologna. The project aims to facilitate interactions and exchanges between researchers and professionals from different European universities through job shadowing experiences that promote professional growth and the sharing of best practices. During her time in Bologna, Miriam had the chance to explore various aspects of the support provided to researchers, as well as immerse herself in the city's cultural and culinary traditions.
During her time in Bologna, Miriam discovered the advanced support system provided by the University of Bologna for Pillar 2 EU-funding (coordinated projects), which she found far more extensive than what is available at her own university. Along with the professional insights gained, Miriam enjoyed a personal experience filled with cultural discoveries, from local food to iconic university landmarks.
An International Opportunity for Exchange
Miriam shared her excitement about learning of the Live My Life project through her contact at UNA Europa. "I’ve always been interested in meeting new people and learning about best practices," she explained. The opportunity to visit another European university and observe their approach to common challenges was a key motivator for her participation. Her visit to Bologna exceeded her expectations, both professionally and personally. "It has been a very interesting experience, both professionally and personally," Miriam added with a smile.
Support for Researchers and Sharing Best Practices
One aspect Miriam particularly appreciated was the level of support the University of Bologna offers its researchers, especially regarding European funding. "The kind of support for European funding lines in pillar 2 (coordinated projects) is on a whole other level compared to what we offer at the University of Zurich," she observed. "Now that Switzerland is re-associated, we can learn a lot from Unibo’s practices." This insight has already sparked specific ideas that Miriam is eager to implement at the University of Zurich.
Unforgettable Moments in Bologna
Beyond the professional aspect, Miriam also deeply appreciated the cultural side of her visit to Bologna. One of the most significant moments for her was a tour of Palazzo Poggi, a historic building that is part of the university. "I really enjoyed the tour, the beauty of the buildings, the artwork, and the history that permeates every corner," she said enthusiastically. Naturally, the culinary delights of Bologna also played a big role in her experience: "I’m a big food lover, and I found some incredible dishes here, like lasagna and tortellini with ragù," she recalled with a smile, adding that she’s excited to try even more local specialties.
An Experience Beyond Expectations
For Miriam, the overall experience in Bologna can be summed up in one word: "Sensational." The combination of professional discoveries, personal growth moments, and the city’s welcoming atmosphere made this experience truly unique. "Both culturally and professionally, it’s been a journey that has enriched me in many ways," she concluded.
The Live My Life program continues to prove a valuable resource for strengthening collaboration between European universities, offering participants opportunities for growth. Miriam's experience serves as a testament to how the exchange of different educational and cultural systems can lead to mutual enrichment, both personally and professionally.
