Exploring Research Integrity Through International Exchange

A Unique Opportunity for Professional Growth

Aura Kivilaakso, Research Integrity Coordinator at the University of Helsinki’s Research Management Support unit, took part in the Live My Life exchange program to explore research integrity and assessment from a new perspective. The opportunity to connect with European colleagues and focus on this thematic field was particularly appealing. Without prior experience in job shadowing, the program offered a chance to gain valuable insights into how different institutions approach research ethics.

Initially, the destination of the exchange was unknown, adding an element of surprise to the process. The match was finally revealed: Blagovester Guetova from the University of Bologna, Secretary for a Research Ethics Committee. This pairing provided a unique opportunity to observe and compare methodologies between the two universities.

Understanding Different Institutional Approaches

After three days in Bologna, the differences and similarities between the two institutions became clear. The colleagues at the University of Bologna were welcoming and highly skilled, making it easy to engage in meaningful discussions. The core aspects of research integrity and ethics review were fundamentally the same, yet the organizational structures and processes had distinct variations. While Helsinki follows a highly structured and thorough approach, Bologna integrates certain aspects with more flexibility. These observations led to reflections on whether some processes in Helsinki could be streamlined while maintaining high standards.

Despite these differences, the shared commitment to upholding research integrity created a strong common ground. The discussions and exchanges reinforced the understanding that, at its heart, the work being done in both institutions aligns closely, even if the methods differ.

An Inspiring and Enriching Experience

Beyond the professional insights, the experience was enriched by interactions with colleagues. The welcoming atmosphere and willingness to share knowledge made the exchange particularly valuable. The opportunity to see things from a different perspective and bring new ideas back to Helsinki made the experience both productive and inspiring.

Cultural Immersion and Personal Impressions

Bologna itself added another layer to the experience. As a city, it stood out from other Italian destinations with its cozy atmosphere and distinctive arcades. Walking through the streets, exploring the surroundings, and experiencing daily life in an academic environment different from Helsinki provided a deeper cultural appreciation.

The Live My Life program was more than just a professional development opportunity—it was a chance to gain fresh perspectives, build meaningful connections, and experience a different academic culture. The insights and experiences gathered from this exchange will continue to shape reflections on research integrity and professional practices for a long time to come.
