Probing quantum properties of compact objects through gravitational waves

I will argue that quantum effects near the horizon can be probed using gravitational waves. In particular, I will demonstrate that such quantum effects, in the guise of the membrane paradigm can affect the ringdown spectrum as well as the inspiral regime. Intriguingly, the tidal heating phenomenon can act as an acid test to unveil these quantum effects. Using these techniques we provide a preliminary bound on parameter(s) emerging from quantum theory of gravity.
