Gravity, geometry, and global symmetries

Low-energy limits of string compactifications are expected to give rise to gravitational field theories that can be UV-completed. As such, one may draw general lessons about quantum-gravitational consistency conditions on effective field theories with dynamical gravity. In this talk, I will highlight how, within the landscape of supergravity theories, some of these conditions manifest themselves in intricate geometric properties of the compactification space, and how they can be interpreted in physical terms using (generalized) global symmetries.
