The Movement of the Concepts of Anima and Animus in Spinoza: Receptions and Resemanticizations of Platonic and Aristotelian Thought Giorgia Lugani e Giacomo Tore

  • Date: 30 MARCH 2023  from 15:00 to 17:00

  • Event location: In presence and online event

  • Type: body-and-mind

The consideration of many interpreters of Spinoza's rejection of the terms Anima and Animus and of the tradition connected to them, results in contradiction with the numerous occurrences of these terms in the Spinoza corpus. The Dutch philosopher reconsiders anthropological discourse in a dialectical dialogue with the authorities of classical Greece and with the Scriptures, in a broader project of re-semanticisation of traditional terms. The aim of the intervention will be to reconstruct some fundamental stages of the evolution of these concepts, from ψυχή and θυμός, through Lucretius' distinction between Anima and Animus, up to the possible renderings in Hebrew, to investigate the actual use of the terms in the Spinoza lexicon and in the context of his philosophical reflection.
