Globalisation and Spinozism: André Tosel’s materialist philosophy

In this seminar we will discuss the materialist perspective on political philosophy of André Tosel (1941-2017). We will begin with the newly translated volume A World in the Abyss. An essay on capitalist globalisation, with the presence of editor and translator Marco Vanzulli. But, taking advantage of the fact that Tosel was not only a great Marxist philosopher but also a fundamental scholar of French Spinozism, we will also discuss his volume Nous citoyens laïques et fraternels. Here Tosel seeks a concrete application of Spinozism to the political problems of contemporary societies. David Maruzzella, editor and English translator of Spinoza ou le crepuscule de la servitude, currently being published in the 'Spinoza Studies' series of Edinburgh University Press, will also speak.
