Presentation: Punto Europa was established in May 1999 in Forlì, as an information and study/documentation centre on European Union-related issues of the University of Bologna, Forlì Campus, thanks to the cooperation of the Municipality of Forlì and the Province of Forlì-Cesena. Part of the Europe Direct network of the European Commission since 2007, in September 2014 Punto Europa has been awarded “Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence”. A JM Centre of Excellence is a focal point of competence and knowledge on European Union subjects, gathering the expertise and competences of high-level experts (including Jean Monnet Chairs and Jean Monnet Module coordinators) and aiming at developing synergies between the various disciplines and resources in European studies, as well as at creating joint transnational activities and structural links with academic institutions in other countries. As part of the Centre of Excellence activities in reaching out to students, Punto Europa organizes the Summer School “The European Union in World Politics: The EU and Migration Issues”. Our aim is to bring talented students from around the world to spend an intensive academic period in the beautiful city of Bertinoro. Selected international academics as well as practitioners will take part to this five-days academic program where concrete aspects of important social, economic and political problems are going to be tackled, contributing to the understanding of selected current issues while fostering the international dialogue. Specifically, the Summer School “The European Union in World Politics: The EU and Migration Issues” is an advanced study for PhD and MA students interested in the EU as a global actor and, in particular, in the management of migration issues; BA students seeking to deepen their knowledge on these topics are also welcome. More specifically, the purpose of the Summer School is threefold: First, it aims to provide participants with an intensive teaching. For this purpose, invited international academics will give frontal lectures on key selected topics. Second, it aims to support participants in debating on migration from different perspectives. In particular, it will be focused on the economic impact of migration; on trafficking in human beings; on migrants’ exploitation; on smuggling and on the border surveillance; on the international protection in the Mediterranean; on the cooperation with third countries and on the possibility to develop new model of relocation and resettlement; on the relation between media and migration; on the possible models of integration. Third, a round-table on the free movement of persons in the EU, with the participation of MEP, State officers and national stakeholders will conclude the summer school. All participants and attendees, who fulfil the requirements during the programme, will be awarded with certificates by Punto Europa, Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence. Participants: Potential participants are PhD students with majoring on EU-Mediterranean related topics; MA/BA students who want to acquire a specific background on EU-Mediterranean related issues is also accepted. The participants are eager to work in an international environment (located in the Mediterranean) with peers, NGO and CSO representatives, being aware that the global job market requires experts who are able to face newly emerging challenges and crises. When: 12-16 September 2016 Where: Summer School will take place in the University Residential Centre of Bertinoro (Ce.U.B.), active since 1994 in the field of vocational training, conferences, congresses and lectures. Ce.U.B. is a vocational training centre of the University of Bologna and it is located in the bishop’s fortress of the ancient town of Bertinoro (Forlì-Cesena). Bertinoro is located on the hilltop of the Romagna area, between the cities of Forlì and Cesena. It was founded by a group of Benedict monks coming from Britain who, at the beginning of the 7th century, built the Castrum Brittanorum, which is the ancient name of the city. Thanks to its strategic location, Bertinoro was sought-after by different feudal families living in the surrounding area, until it was progressively absorbed by the Papal. Beginning in the 13th century, the judge Guido del Duca wanted Bertinoro to be renowned for its hospitality, therefore he built the “Column of Hospitality”. The column has twelve rings, there are as many as the noble families living in Bertinoro: every time a pilgrim would arrive in Bertinoro, he would tie his horse at one of the rings and thus become the guest of that family. Hospitality is an extremely important value inside the civil society, and the guests are warmly welcomed in the community. How to apply: Please fill in and submit the Application Form.
