Mobility experience with a research focus
Master students involved in the final research; PhD sandwich; Post Doc
Department of Sciences and Methods for Engineering (DISMI) - Doctorate School in Industrial Innovation Engineering
Students will participate to the research activity of the group in Optimization, led by prof. Manuel Iori.
The group comprises 2 post docs and 10 PhD students and collaborates with several companies in fields such as logistics, production, healthcare and energy. The group studies optimization problems and aims at producing algorithms capable of solving real-world instances and of competing with state-of-the-art algorithms in the literature.
The activity of the group is mostly directed towards combinatorial optimization, with a focus on Bin Packing, Vehicle Routing, Pickup-and-Delivery, and Scheduling problems. It also encompasses modern activities of Operations Research, including forecasting, machine learning and decision support techniques.
The student will be asked to contribute to the full solution of a problem. This may require to develop optimization code, or provide existing code with the necessary information to make it fully usable in practice. This may lead to using techniques from Machine Learning (to, e.g., accurately forecast data) and Decision Support (to, e.g., take into account multiple objectives or provide users with friendly solution tools).
All activities are carried out in English. In case they are interested, students may be able to learn Italian through free courses offered by the UNIMORE language centre.
Good knowledge of English. Good knowledge of the basic principles of Operations Research and Optimization. Good knowledge of a programming language (preferably C/C++ and/or Python). Strong interest in developing new research and in applying it to real-world problems.
