Mobility experience with a research focus
Master students involved in the final research; PhD sandwich; Post Doc
Department of Sciences and Methods for Engineering (DISMI) - Doctorate School in Industrial Innovation Engineering at University of Modena and Reggio Emilia
Students will participate to the research activity of the group in Optimization, led by prof. Manuel Iori.
The group comprises 3 post docs and 8 PhD students and collaborates with several companies in optimization problems in logistics, production, healthcare and energy. The activity of the group is mostly directed towards combinatorial optimization, with a focus on Bin Packing, Vehicle Routing, Pickup-and-Delivery, and Scheduling problems. It also encompasses modern activities of Operations Research, including forecasting, machine learning and decision support techniques.
Recently, we have also started projects in Quantum Computing for Optimization, an area that has excellent opportunities for early-stage researchers.
The student will be asked to contribute to the full solution of a problem. This may require to develop optimization code and make it fully usable in practice. This may lead to using techniques from Machine Learning (to, e.g., accurately forecast data) and Decision Support (to, e.g., take into account multiple objectives). The outcome will be included in a report to be submitted for publication.
All activities are carried out in English. In case they are interested, students may be able to learn Italian through free courses offered by the UNIMORE language centre.
Good knowledge of English
Good knowledge of the basic principles of Operations Research and Optimization. Good knowledge of a programming language (preferably C/C++ and/or Python). Strong interest in developing new research and in applying it to real-world problems.
