Main research activities/topics/projects

The research activity focuses on the development and application of advanced methodologies for multi-hazard and multi-vulnerability assessment in complex territorial systems. The work is grounded in an interdisciplinary framework integrating structural engineering, urban planning, environmental sciences and risk analysis, in line with international frameworks such as the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.
Main research topics can be chosen among:

  • Multi-hazard analysis, including hydrogeological risk, floods, droughts, heat waves, seismic hazard and technological risks (NaTech)
  • Analysis of hazard interactions and cascading effects through Hazard Interaction Matrices
  • Spatial analysis of exposure, including population, built environment, infrastructure systems and ecosystems
  • Multi-dimensional vulnerability assessment, including physical, social, systemic and environmental components
  • Development of GIS-based territorial models using homogeneous spatial units
  • Application of Multi-Criteria Decision-Making methods (AHP-based) for integrated risk assessment
  • Scenario-based simulation for risk mitigation and climate adaptation strategies (e.g. nature-based solutions, urban regeneration, de-impermeabilization strategies)
  • Support to territorial and urban planning tools (PGT, mobility plans, climate adaptation strategies) through risk-informed approaches

The research combines data analysis, spatial modelling, and scenario simulation, with possible applications to real case studies in the Lombardy region.
