Embark on a cutting-edge research journey on large-scale energy system modeling with our esteemed Power System group, heavily involved in geospatial analysis for optimization of power systems. This project focuses on the strategic planning of generation and/or network assets for a candidate-selected regional area, whether it be a municipality, a country, or any specific region on Earth, using state-of-the-art tools and methodologies. Notably, our members are engaged in the PyPSA meets Earth initiative and they are maintainers of the open- source energy modelling tools PyPSA-Earth, PyPSA- Distribution, and EnergyCommunity.jl, able to model the energy transition of any country and region in the world, showcasing our commitment to sustainable and innovative energy solutions that can actively support the project. As a researcher in our group, you will have the unique opportunity to collaborate side-by-side with experts who are not only at the forefront of optimization techniques for energy systems but also actively shaping its evolution for global applications. The candidate will have the opportunity to craft the research study in the area of major interest among large-scale sector-coupled optimization for the energy transition. Possible examples are the investigation of the technology options for a regional energy transition study, planning the distribution system and decentralized generation for a municipality, effects of interconnection into the transmission system, the role of storage technologies in large energy systems, sector-coupled multi-energy studies, among others. This opportunity will offer the candidate room for building up skills in the optimization of energy systems for the energy transition, increasing network abilities to engage in our global research community in large-scale system modelling and potentially contribute in the ongoing projects relevant to the topic. Join us and be a part of a team dedicated to advancing the understanding and implementation of large-scale energy systems in the context of a rapidly evolving global energy landscape.
