Large dams: challenging hydraulic structures in a changing world

  • What it is

Mobility experience with a research focus

  • Who it’s for

    PhD sandwich; Post Doc

Department

DESTEC – Department of Energy, Systems, Territory and Construction Engineering

Main research activities/topics/projects

Large dams are hydraulic structures of fundamental importance for many human activities. However, climate change poses serious challenges to hydraulic engineers, highlighting the importance of a more comprehensive approach for their lifecycle management. The prospective PhD candidate/Post Doc will study the effects of climate changes on large dams, focusing on the impact of increasing flow discharges on spillways, energy dissipation, and jet-driven scour processes. The aim is to provide practitioners with useful tools to make the existing structures more efficient and safer, and new dams more resilient. The fields of research are hydraulics and hydraulic structures.
