Fracture toughness and fatigue crack growth of metallic materials in air and specific corrosive environments

  • What it is

Mobility experience with a research focus

  • Who it’s for

Master students involved in the final research, PhD sandwich, Post Doc

Department

Department of Mechanical Engineering,  Politecnico of Milan

Main research activities/topics/projects

Development of experimental methodologies for fracture toughness and fatigue crack growth (da/dN curves) of metals in air and in specific environments related mainly to the Oil and Gas industry. Microstructural improvements of metallic materials aimed at increasing fracture toughness. Recent work has focused on monotonic and fatigue testing of metals produced by additive manufacturing, as well as on the toughness evaluation of steels and titanium alloys in harsh environments at low and high pressures for applications in the Oil and Gas and food industries.

Working language

Main working language: English (written reports, papers). Oral communication: English, Italian, Portuguese

Special entry requirements

Basic to intermediate knowledge of linear elastic and elastic-plastic fracture mechanics theory is desirable. Familiarity with mechanical testing of metals is also recommended. A strong interest in experimental work related to the fracture and fatigue of metals is necessary.
