The Mapathon is a marathon of mapping and entering geographical information on OpenStreetMap (OSM) which involves small or large groups of individuals, each with their own computer connected to the Internet. During our Mapathon events, we present the OSM project and show participants how to get started contributing. OSM is a free map of the entire world that is constantly created and edited by millions of volunteers around the world through a crowdmapping process. The availability of maps is crucial for aiding emergency disaster operations as well as numerous humanitarian programmes, such as the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT): a global group working to improve humanitarian action and strengthen local communities through free, public mapping.
