The project has been officially started in May 2025 and will be ongoing for 36 months. Updates on the project development will be made through this website.
Resource recovery at the ICTA-UAB LCA Symposium!
The 1st international Symposium of Life Cycle Assessment organized by the Sostenipra research group was held on the 4th to 6th of June at the Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona. I was not only able to present our research on urine recovery and reuse in hydroponic tomato production, but I was also given the opportunity to be part of the organization committee!
It was a very interesting and enriching experience, specially due to the exploration of circularity and resource use proposed by the symposium call.
Project Kick-off Presentation:
The project content, aim and progress has been presented for the first time on the 15th of July at the University of Bologna as well as the Institute of environmental sciences (ICTA-UAB) in Barcelona.
This initial project dissemination marks a first deliverable within its early days, being crucial to create connections and a relevant networking.
The project will be updated regularly, offering open workshops and seminars every three months, which will be announced through the project website, blog (https://sites.google.com/view/madloop/news) and the lead researchers social networks (https://www.linkedin.com/in/veronica-arcas-pilz-011554127/).
Karibu Kenya! The project secondment in Nairobi has started.
For the following month (from the 15th of November to the 15th of December 2026) I will be in Nairobi for the first project secondment. I will be visiting the university Jomo Kenyatta as well as the urban agricultrue projects around the areas of Mathare, Korogocho, Lucky Summer and Dandora thanks to the collaboration with the Growth 4 Change team.
Seminar at the Jomo Kenyatta University
During my stay in Nairobi I was fortunate to be able to present the MADLoop project and teach the ideas behind the coupling of urban waste and agriculture through the principles of circular economy.
It was a very nice experience and it's all thanks to professor Annah Indeche and Professor John Wesonga.
My visit to Nairobi has come to an end.
Sadly the secondment has flown by and it's time to go back to Bologna. The time in Nairobi has been very fruiteful and eyeopening for the project development and the collaboration with the Jomo Kenyatta university and the Growth 4 Change organization has been brilliant and incredibly necessary to fully understand the needs of the urban agriculture scene in Nairobi and the current waste flow metabolism.
I can say I have graduated on MADLoop 101 thanks to this first secondment.
Thankfull for the experience!
The technical visit to Barcelona for the Urban farm challenge has started!

The MADLoop project presented at the Urban Farm Challenge 2026 Grand Finale

On the 21st of May the project was presented to all participants showing the experiences of the first year of project developement. The project was not only presented to the involved students (online and offline) but also to the challenge Jury and the researchers from the ICTA-UAB institute.
