Serena Baldin, coordinator of the Trieste research unit for the LUMEN project, has just published a new article in Italian developed within the framework of the project, titled “The Expansive Capacity of the Rights of Nature: The Rights of Non-Human Animals in Ecuadorian Socio-Biocentrism,” in Nuovi Autoritarismi e Democrazie: Diritto, Istituzioni, Società (NAD-DIS).

The study explores how Ecuador’s constitution extends rights to non-human animals through explicit provisions and an expansive interpretation of Article 71 on the rights of nature. The contribution focuses on the implications of recognizing animal rights through Article 71 and seeks to address three questions: Does individual protection apply to all species or only certain categories? What rights are granted to animals? Are there limitations to the enjoyment of these rights?

The article is available on the journal website.
