Learning Math in Prison (LeMP), an interventionist “educational design research” project, is presented. LeMP responds to the needs expressed by Italian mathematics teachers in prison to have adequate training and to have teaching materials suitable for the context in which they are working. Within LeMP, organized sets of mathematical tasks are co-constructed by researchers and teachers collaborating. Through the repetition of several cycles of context-analysis, design, and evaluation of products, the project is providing design principles for mathematics education in the prison context and examples of applications of such principles in various tasks.
