About us

Mission

The Study Group “Musical Iconography” of the International Musicological Society (IMS) was established during the international conference Musical Iconography in the XXI Century: Mapping European Art for Context and Meaning (Ravenna, June 7–10, 2006) and acknowledged by the IMS directorium at the end of June 2006. Its main goal is to promote scholarly exchange on musical iconography within musicological, art historical, archeological, historical, cultural and anthropological studies from antiquity to the twenty-first century.

In addition to a wide range of subjects related to the history, transmission and reception of iconographical themes, to the different ways in which music has been conceived and visualized through the ages – hence to the history of ideas in the line of the Warburg tradition –, contributions pertinent to the performing arts, music and architecture, intermedia and synesthesia, among others, are welcome as well.

We organize international conferences, sessions and panels, particularly within the IMS quinquennial congresses, but also in cooperation with our international sister organizations. Study group members regularly contribute to workshops, doctoral seminars, and summer schools on various topics. Last but not least, public events such as exhibitions and festivals allow to advance relevant knowledge on the field of musical iconography outside of the academic community.
