ICAHI Project at World Anthropology Day 2026
World Anthropology Day 2026 – VIAVAI VAIVIA. Mobility, Residence, Confinements
The ICAHI project will be presented as part of the event Voices in Space: Mobility, Rights and Interpreting in Asylum Hearings, on Thursday 19 February at the Liceo delle Scienze Umane “Regina Margherita”, Via Casana 5, Turin.
The project Interlingual and Intercultural Communication in International Protection Hearings in Italy offers an activity aimed at schools in Milan and Turin, focusing on the (im)mobility that characterises asylum procedures. Through a guided viewing of a simulated hearing video based on empirical data, students will observe the communicative dynamics and misunderstandings that emerge in asymmetrical institutional contexts. Our workshop will demonstrate how linguistic inequalities affect access to rights and how competent mediation can foster inclusion, social awareness, and justice.
Speakers
Mediated Communication in Asylum Hearings: An Interaction- and Discourse-Centred Approach
On 26 February 2026, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., the International University College (via Cigna 37, Turin) will host the seminar “Mediated Communication in Asylum Hearings: An Interaction- and Discourse-Centred Approach”, organised by lawyer Maurizio Veglio, with the participation of Dr Amalia Amato (University of Bologna).
The seminar will present the findings of a research project devoted to the qualitative and empirical analysis of interpreter-mediated communication in asylum hearings in Italy. Drawing on an interdisciplinary framework that combines interaction analysis, Critical Discourse Analysis, and interpreting studies, the talk will explore the role of interpreters and cultural mediators throughout the different phases of the interview, highlighting critical issues, power dynamics, and ethical concerns.
Our training video based on participant observation and field interviews will also be presented as a professional development and self-training tool for practitioners working in this field.
The initiative aims to contribute to the debate on best practices in international protection procedures, with particular attention to the joint training of interpreters and officers and to the enhancement of professional standards.
Interpreting for Asylum Seekers in Italy
Research Day – AiLab, IULM
On Friday 20 March at 3:15 p.m., as part of the Research Day and within the initiatives promoted by the CRUI (Conference of Italian University Rectors) for the National University Day, Dr Fabrizio Gallai and Valentina Baselli will deliver the seminar “Interpreting for Asylum Seekers in Italy.”
The seminar will provide an overview of interpreting practices in international protection hearings, focusing on communicative dynamics, professional roles, and ethical implications in this highly complex institutional and human context. Drawing on research data and case studies, the speakers aim to contribute to the academic and professional debate on the quality of language mediation in contemporary migration settings.
