ELECTROCHEMISTRY IN LIFE SCIENCE

Dr. Rapino and collaborators in IEO characterized the respiration of isolated mitochondria using a specific system consisting in the integration of microelectrodes modified for the measurement of hydrogen peroxide in an oxygraph used for the measurement of the oxygen consumption. This instrument allowed the simultaneous detection of reactive oxygen species evolution and of oxygen consumption. The obtained results showed that the activation of ATP synthase increases hydrogen peroxide production. Electrochemical techniques were used to study the kinetics of iron release and uptake from ferritin, the alteration of these kinetics are due to a modification in the ferritin amino-acidic sequence typical of a rare genetic neurological disorder.
