Located in Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture, “Shinsenkyo” is a Japanese garden conceived and realized by Mokichi Okada, the founder of the Hakone Museum of Art and MOA Museum of Art, during the chaotic postwar period between 1944 and 1953.

In March 2021, "Shinsenkyo" was designated as a Site of National Scenic Beauty in recognition of its value as a cultural asset. The garden is composed of "Sekirakuen," a garden with a combination of artificial hills, streams, waterfalls, and paths that can be enjoyed while walking around the garden; "Moss Garden," where moss like a flexible green fabric competes with the beauty of autumn leaves.

The buildings include the "Registered Tangible Cultural Property Shinzanso," "Kanzantei," "Nikkoden," " Main Exhibition Building and Annex," and "Sangetsuan" tea house.

Dr. Makoto Motonaka has been involved in the survey of cultural properties such as the section of the site of scenic beauty as the chief cultural property surveyor of the Agency for Cultural Affairs, and has also been involved in UNESCO's World Heritage Sites such as the Industrial Revolution Heritage as a Cabinet Secretariat Counsellor.

In this lecture, Dr. Motonaka, with his expertise of the world's cultural heritage, presents and highlights the attractiveness of Japanese gardens through "Shinsenkyo, a Site of National Scenic Beauty" and discussing the value of cultural properties in Japan.

Motonaka Makoto is the Director of the National Institute for Research on Cultural Assets.
