The excavations in the Picenian and Roman necropolis in Corinaldo are part of the research conducted by ArcheoNevola, a multidisciplinary project that applies non-invasive survey and land mapping methodologies for the diachronic analysis of the Nevola valley (northern Marche region), which is still poorly known from an archaeological point of view and has many gaps in its knowledge of the most ancient population dynamics. Aerial and geophysical surveys, in fact, have led to the recent discovery in Corinaldo of a Picenian necropolis of the Orientalizing period composed of large annular ditches, and the excavation of the largest circle has brought to light a princely tomb referable to a high-ranking figure of the Picenian culture.
The oldest tomb nucleus is flanked by a Roman necropolis, the exploration of which is proving equally important for the reconstruction of the funerary landscape and its evolution over time, also in relation to ideological aspects and associated rituality.
The archaeological investigations are also connected to a modern land transformation project, according to the procedures of modern preventive archaeology.
The research project has been active since 2017 and the excavation in the necropolis in the Nevola locality in Corinaldo, under MIBACT concession, since 2018.
