Designing the European medium-sized City. Sustainability issues, case studies and models of public space in medium-sized cities

THE EVENT WILL BE AVAILABLE ON STREAMING FROM 9.30 AM ON 28 MAY

This third seminar of the European project ARCHEA is dedicated to studies on the role of public spaces in contemporary urban projects and its role in higher education. This Seminar follows that of the University of Rouen in March 2019, ARCHEA partner teams.

The Seminar, which will take place at Politechnika Slaska, will be structured in three parts: the first will be dedicated to data models and models of public space; the second to the approach of the European partners; the third at the presentation of realized projects of public spaces and site visit with designers' commentary.

The first part of the seminar, aims to focus on models of public space. For the purpose of delivering possibly best solutions data analysis is crucial. The role of models in urban design teaching, and for urban design analysis seems to be important issue today. 3d models slowly replace physical models are often more than just a presentation models - they are used as a information database of different parameters. Also models that demonstrate some data might be useful for better understanding of contemporary problems. An exhibition entitled MODELS OF THE STRUCTURE OF BOLOGNA CITY will be held during the seminar. The exhibition demonstrates models' potential in understanding of public spaces' role in the cities.

The second part of the seminar, aims to focus on sustainability issues of public space. The definition of public space is still wide and the term public space can be understood in different ways. The visual approach to public space is not enough since the question of its sustainability is also very important. Typical urban open spaces such as paths and plazas can be referred to following sustainability issues: accessibility for various users, quality assessment. Other such as parks, rivers or, boulevards can be referred to the 'green dimension'. However other aspects of the public space can deliver sustainability. We must consider what matters on sustainability in truly compact medium sized city.

The third part of the seminar aims to discuss the sustainability issues of the public space at the design stage, and to confront the design principles with realization.
