Event location: Archaeological Park of the Roman town of Suasa
From 9 June to 11 July 2025, the 38th Archaeological Research Campaign took place at the Archaeological Park of the Roman City of Suasa, organised by the Department of History, Culture and Civilisation at the University of Bologna and carried out in collaboration with the Superintendence of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the provinces of Ancona and Pesaro Urbino.
The campaign involved around forty lecturers, researchers and students in laboratory and excavation work. An initial phase was devoted to updating the topographical documentation and studying materials from previous research campaigns.
Field investigations focused on the southern sector of the Roman city, with the aim of gaining a deeper understanding of its urban layout and defining its boundaries.
Trench 1/2025 brought to light a section of the urban road network, buildings facing the street and areas characterised by paving, wells and drainage systems. Among the most significant finds is a substantial hoard of bronze coins discovered inside a drainage channel. The evidence suggests the presence of an area designated for productive activities on the outskirts of the settlement.
Trench 2/2025 revealed a complex hydraulic system comprising wells, basins, channels and what is likely to be a cistern. The materials found indicate that the area was inhabited from the Republican era through to the early Middle Ages and confirm the area’s history as a centre of craftsmanship.
Overall, the 2025 Campaign has provided new data on the urban development of Suasa, helping to define more precisely the southern boundary of the town and the transformations that took place in this area between the Roman and early medieval periods.
