Archaeology of the Central Adriatic Landscapes

Urban archaeology is one of the University of Bologna’s signature research areas, rooted in a long-standing tradition of studies in the Central Adriatic region. Field research reveals the complexity of a phenomenon that focuses not only on cities and major settlements but also on sacred landscapes and scattered settlements. The study of Adriatic landscapes fosters the development of an alternative perspective that diverges from the more well-known interpretive models developed on the Tyrrhenian side. Research conducted in urban areas with a continuous history of habitation, in abandoned settlements, and in rural sanctuaries reveals a landscape characterized by distinct phenomena across different historical periods.
