The key purposes of the IMAGE LIFE project can be outlined as follows:
- increase production stability over several years of resilient crops as a source of grain for animal feed (sorghum, millet, wheat, and sunflower);
- optimize the agronomic performance of resilient crops (in terms of preserving soil fertility, reducing GHGs emissions, and biodiversity protection);
- replace maize with sorghum (at 15% of the total cultivated amount of maize) and reduce dependence on maize grain imports;
- reduce the demand for water for crop irrigation;
- create a Parmigiano Reggiano supply chain based on a resilient scientific approach as the main pillar of adaptation and a local production system more independent from technical input and foreign imports of raw materials
