What is ENDLIT?

ENDLIT is a research product developed within the PRIN 2022 project Getting ready for the present: new global dystopian imaginaries and public engagement. Transcultural and transmedial dialogues between Japanese, Latin American, British and Angloamerican cultures.”

It is a tool designed to classify and connect dystopian and post-apocalyptic works. Its functioning is based on a key element: the Trigger Event, the rupture that generates the narrative world and enables comparisons across works from different contexts.

How does it work?

  • Each work is analyzed starting from a Trigger Event described through four aspects: Agency (who causes it), Type (what kind of event it is), Kernel (how it manifests), and Scale (how extensive it is).
  • From these combinations (640 in total), ENDLIT builds connections among diverse works.
  • Additional tags further describe the consequences and developments within the narrative world.

How is it used?

A work is labeled with its Trigger Event and the relevant tags.
If the Trigger Event does not exist or cannot be described, the work does not fall within the ENDLIT framework.
