Silvana Di Sabatino

Full Professor, Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Bologna

Prof. Silvana Di Sabatino is the director of the Summer School, coordinator of the OPERANDUM project and Full Professor of Atmospheric Physics at University of Bologna where she teaches Boundary-layer Physics and Turbulent Dispersion, Dynamic Meteorology, and Climatology. She holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge (UK) in the area of environmental fluid mechanics. Her current research relates to urban microclimate and its interconnection with climate variability, city breathability and its connection with urban planning. Among her research interest there is the development of tools to connect basic research with applied science closely related to respond to the needs of modern society. She is Associate editor of Environmental Fluid Dynamics (Springer) and serves the editorial board of Boundary-Layer Meteorology (Kluwer). She has co-authored more than 100 scientific publications of which over 50 in peer review journals.

Dr. Laura Sandra Leo is the coordinator of the ALBATROSS project and Senior Assistant Professor in the Atmospheric Physics group who focuses her studies on fundamental atmospheric boundary-layer flow dynamics in complex and heterogeneous environments (e.g. urban areas, coastal zones and mountainous terrain) by combining primarily experimental field measurements, data analyses and theoretical modelling. Recently involved in interdisciplinary research on the mapping and assessment of nature-based solutions as sustainable measures for hydrometeorological risk reduction and climate change adaptation and mitigation, and in the development of a web platform for dissemination and exploitation of nature-based solutions and other activities of data management.

Professor of Environmental Risk and Community Resilience at the University of Glasgow's School of Interdisciplinary Studies in Dumfries and Research Director for the National Centre for Resilience, an organisation which aims to build Scotland's resilience to natural hazards. His research activity focuses on two major themes: the environmental dimension of vulnerability and risk, particularly in coastal and deltaic environments, and the links between human activities, water pollution, and the risks these pose to ecosystems and human health.

Beatrice Pulvirenti carries out her research in the field of thermo-fluid dynamics. Her research interests are aimed at engineering applications of fluid dynamics and heat exchange, in particular, multiphase fluid dynamics in microchannels, fluid dynamics in porous media and non-Newtonian fluid dynamics. Engaged in national and international research projects, she collaborates with various research groups in order to explore nature based solutions (NBS) techniques in a context of climate change.

Professor Porcù is Associate Professor of Physics of the Earth System at the Department of Physics and Astronomy "Augusto Righi" of the University of Bologna (Italy) since 2020. His research interests are focused on the microphysical processes in the atmosphere involving aerosols, clouds and precipitation, and on their observations through remote sensors. Applications are mainly devoted to agrometeorology, hydrology, climate and the prevention of hydrogeological risks.

His activities mainly focus on Disaster Risk Management in support of international frameworks like Sendai, IPCC, SDG, Floods Directive etc. Milan has a long record of developing user-tailored products and effectively communicating and disseminating information in disaster risk management community (e.g. EC Copernicus services, National Water Authorities, EU Civil protection).
