Vitam instituere (2023) concludes the research started by Roberto Esposito with Pensiero istituente (2020) and Istituzione (2021). After having identified, in the contemporary philosophical debate, an alternative path to the "ontologie impolitiche" of Heidegger and Deleuze, and having investigated the "historical difficulties" and "paradigmatic resources" of a new thinking about institutions, Esposito now intends to "look at the history of philosophy from a point of view that is itself instituting". In this way, he projects the instituting perspective onto modern philosophical thought, with the aim of reinterpreting the latter and shedding new light on contemporary thinking about the institution. In the 'genealogy of the institution' of Vitam instituere, Spinoza plays a central role. A philosopher "of an ever-acting power", therefore "continually instituting", in Esposito's reflection Spinoza presents himself as the first "to fully assume the principle of vitam institure", with what this entails regarding the relationship between ontology and politics.
