Descrizione del Progetto

In this project, students will dive into the world of pharmacy using virtual reality for anatomy, physiology, and in silico molecular modelling applications. This will help them appreciate the crucial impact of these subjects on understanding human health and the discovery of new medicines. Beyond virtual reality, students will gain practical skills through several laboratory activities. They'll evaluate antioxidant power, a key factor in improving health. They will learn to prepare pharmaceutical medications through a galenic laboratory activity, mimicking real-world pharmacy practice. Finally, they will extract and analyse the active principle from a commercial drug.

Obiettivi del Progetto

The project is designed to allow students to truly share the experience of a pharmacy student, integrating theoretical understanding with practical laboratory work.

Elenco attività

0 - Initial online introductory module on transversal skills (by the Rimini Campus Orientation Office) - 2 h. online (IN ITALIANO)

1 - Virtual reality applications for chemistry and biology. For those students who own a Meta Oculus Quest headset, bringing it along is optional, and we recommend downloading the following free applications: molecular modelling Nanome (https://nanome.ai/); anatomy (https://www.medicinevirtual.com/); BodyWorks (https://www.meta.com/it-it/experiences/bodyworks/2768642366575010/?srsltid=AfmBOoqlTOCL4iHUt69PZxKppxihDilK5GIAIVM0NBjlfcCDQ9OA168L4 h. in the classroom (IN ENGLISH)

2 - Introduction to oxidative stress and its role in chronic degenerative diseases.
Laboratory activity: evaluation of the antioxidant power of molecules and plant extracts; setting up of a cell culture. 1 h. in the classroom + 3 h. in laboratory (IN ENGLISH)

3 - Understanding how medicines are manufactured and exert their effects, including an exploration of key dosage forms.
Laboratory activity: galenic preparation of charcoal capsules and camphor-menthol ointment. 1 h. in the classroom + 3 h. in laboratory (IN ENGLISH)

4 - Principles of pharmaceutical analysis with a focus on separation techniques and thin layer chromatography.
Laboratory activity: thin layer chromatography analysis of active principles extracted from pharmaceutical preparations. 1 h. in the classroom + 3 h. in laboratory (IN ENGLISH)

A report on each afternoon's activity, totalling 8 hours to be done independently. Students can send their reports in the days immediately following, or they have until 28 February to complete them.
