Consortium

The consortium of RESTART includes 3 research groups from the University of Rome "La Sapienza", University of Bologna and CNR-ISAC.

University of Rome "La Sapienza", Dept of Physics

Expertise: Characterization of the atmospheric boundary layer in urban, semi-rural and rural environments (BAQUNIN, SBAM, CONCERNING, SOUVENIR, CollectionCare). The University hosts the main location of the BAQUNIN supersite (http://baqunin.eu/), where a large number of active and passive remote sensing instruments collect routinely and synergistically thermodynamic variables, air quality and trace gases datasets allowing for atmospheric monitoring and calibration/validation of satellite products since 2016.

Expertise: Extensive experience in studying atmospheric boundary-layer dynamics and urban air quality in complex and heterogeneous environments by combining field campaigns using both high-end and low cost sensors, remote sensing, extensive data analysis, and theoretical modelling. Characterization of the effects induced by green infrastructure and mitigation strategies on pollutant concentration, thermal comfort and ventilation in urban street canyons and urban environments (iSCAPE, I-CHANGE, TRIGGER), both using intensive experimental field campaigns and numerical simulations at different spatial and temporal scales. Development of parameterizations to account for the presence of vegetation and NBS in numerical simulations at different spatial scales (neighbourhood to urban). Development of methods for downscaling the outputs of mesoscale models for use in dispersion models. Investigation of the UHI effect at multiple intra-city scales. Investigation of the UHI-UPI interaction within a street canyon. Satellite data analysis and machine learning techniques for the identification and classification of the scenes (clear, cloudy, aerosol). Developed experience with citizen engagement, results dissemination in public events and use of low-cost sensors.
