A Conceptual Approach to the Late Ottoman-Turkish Literary Field
Two-day workshop organized by the project NONWESTLIT
University of Bologna
The research team of the ERC project “Modernizing Empires: Enlightenment, Nationalist Vanguards and Non-Western Literary Modernities” is delighted to announce the upcoming workshop on A Conceptual Approach to the Late Ottoman-Turkish Literary Field. This two-day workshop, to be held in University of Bologna on February 29-March 1, 2024, will host scholars and researchers to explore the interplay between literary modernity and Ottoman-Turkish literature and criticism during the nineteenth century, based on a conceptual approach. The nineteenth century marked a significant period of transition and evolution for Ottoman-Turkish literature, as it experienced a profound shift from traditional forms to Western-oriented and innovative literary expressions. The participants in the workshop will explore the radical reconfigurations of central notions of literature, authorship, translation, fiction and other literary concepts that occurred in the nineteenth century. The participants will focus on one literary or cultural concept related to their field of research and offer a historical assessment and in-depth analysis as it relates to the Late Ottoman-Turkish literary field.
The presentations will be in English or Turkish, recognizing the importance of fostering academic discussions in both languages and promoting a diverse and inclusive scholarly environment. The workshop will also offer hybrid participation options, enabling remote attendees to join the discussions.
