Russian literature of 19th century is often described as either unique or borrowed from Western Europe. Both contradictory statements are to a certain degree correct: during the cultural transfer to the Russian Empire even well-known concepts such as French “belles lettres” or Polish “narodowość” could take on highly unusual meanings. The international workshop “Concepts of Criticism: Translatables/ Untranslatables of the 19th century Russian Literary Culture” brings together an international collective of specialists on literary and intellectual history of the Russian Empire to discuss the basic concepts used in literary criticism in 19th century and what they can tell about the political, social and cultural situation in the Russian Empire.
