NEXTRES will study the combined effect of climate extremes (in particular droughts and heatwaves) and an increase in atmospheric nitrogen deposition on forest water-use efficiency. To this aim, dendroecological measurements at tree scale will be integrated with ecosystem scale measurements using the eddy co-variance technique. Tree and forest ecosystem responses to global change will be evaluated at different temporal resolution: last three decades and intra-annual scale in years characterised by climate extreme (thanks to the innovative use of isotope measurements with a mass spectrometer coupled to an ablation system laser). The project includes 12 forests (of which 3 in Italy), which are part of long-term monitoring networks (ICP Forests, ICOS/Fluxnet), selected along an environmental gradient that goes from the boreal forest in Finland to the deciduous forests in the Mediterranean basin.
