The PhD program in Mathematics aims to train its students for an academic or professional career, in the area of Pure and Applied Mathematics. The program combines study and research, with the aim of extending and deepening students’ knowledge in mathematics and, at the same time, developing their ability to address and solve complex problems, obtaining new results in some active research area.
The training includes, especially in the initial phase, the attendance of advanced courses, held both by professors of the Mathematics Department, and by visiting professors, both Italian and foreign. Participation in seminars and conferences organized at the department, and in conferences and research schools in Italy and abroad, are also part of the training.
The research activity consists in carrying out an original research project that each PhD student develops under the supervision of one or more advisors. The aim is to lead the students to achieve some original results in mathematics, pure or applied.
PhD students enjoy the scientific and academic life of the Mathematics Department, they are given access to the departmental facilities (library, computers, etc.) and have a personal desk in a shared office.
