Main research activities/topics/projects

The research activity is focused on the development of highly selective and productive ruthenium catalysts for hydrogenation and transfer hydrogenation of carbonyl compounds, including esters, by means of hydrogen, 2- propanol, ethanol and formic acid. These green transformations are applied to the conversion of aldehydes, ketones and esters with particular regard to those obtained from biomass (i.e. levulinates, furfural, cinnamaldehyde, triglycerides) to alcohols which find broad applications as detergents, aromas, pheromones, pharma intermediates and fine chemicals, within a circular
economy. Several approaches are applied including photocatalysis, mechanochemistry and catalysis in water.
