Within the framework of Performacy – a research group coordinated by Matteo Paoletti, focusing on the relationship between performing arts, soft power, and cultural diplomacy – the PhD will have to analyse the influence of Italian theatre on the Brazilian theatrical scene in the Twentieth century, focusing on selected case studies. If the role of migration flows from Europe to the ‘Cono Sur’ has already been recognised seminal for the development of the performing arts in South America, most of the works have focused on the 1920s and 1930s, during which Mussolini’s foreign policy sustained an aware use of the performing arts (notably, opera, drama, and revue), as tools for cultural diplomacy. However, migration of Italian theatrical practitioners to Brazil continued after WWII: if their role has already been recognised pivotal, their relationship with institutions and foreign policy still needs to be framed, especially when spoken theatre is at stake. The PhD student will have to support the preliminary study of Brazilian and Italian press, to seek any possible connection of those practitioners and their Brazilian tours with institutions, diplomacy, and local governments.
