Main research activities/topics/projects

The Project WInGS (Women Intellectuals in Greek Society), which involves three Universities (Milan, Bologna, and Bergamo), aims to launch a Greek “intellectual history of women” based on female intellectual activities, independent from male paradigms.

The Unit based in Bologna is currently working on women epigrammatists from the Hellenistic to the imperial age. It deals with both individual authors from the Hellenistic and imperial age and more general issues, including crucial research questions to be addressed on a comparative basis: what features, if any, distinguished the poetry of women epigrammatists from those of men, from a thematic and stylistic point of view? Were their poems originally destined to an exclusively female audience, in the frame of e.g. religious and cultic contexts, or were they conceived from the very beginning for the entire community? Were they inscribed in public spaces? To what extent ancient male sources on these figures affect our understanding of their identities and of their activities? Particular attention is being paid to epigraphic texts, in order to conduct a comprehensive survey of Hellenistic and imperial epigraphs concerning women intellectuals. The candidate is expected to be integrated in the activities of the research group and of the PhD program in Philological and Literary Cultures.
