Main research activities/topics/projects

With this project, we aim to study how the absence of gravitational stimuli can modify not only the muscular, metabolic, and bone characteristics of an individual but also the neurogenic capacities in areas normally considered to be the repositories of the proliferative and differentiative activity of the adult mammalian brain, namely the subventricular zone and the hippocampus. In light of the relatively close interplanetary travel experiences (Earth-Mars), astronauts will also be subjected to microgravity for long periods of time, and therefore knowledge of the neurogenic and possibly cognitive alterations that they could undergo could be of primary importance for planning such trips.

Furthermore, this project will also be impactful on Earth and will help to understand how the neurogenic capacities of individuals affected by pathologies that reduce their movement capacity, such as spinal cord injury or spinal muscular atrophy, change and how this is then reflected in the pathology itself.
