Main research activities/topics/projects

Climate change and human actions are compromising the conservation status of natural habitats, spontaneous plant, and animal species. To cope with these changes, different methods can be applied for the protection and conservation of habitats and plant species biodiversity. Among the methods used to conserve the biodiversity, micropropagation is a multiplication technique that allows to obtain a clone of the plant or a set of individuals with the same genetic heritage, using in vitro culture methods of plant tissues.

The In vitro Lab research group was established a few years ago and addresses various aspects concerning in vitro cultures and propagation techniques. Research activities focus on:

  • in vitro and in vivo propagation techniques of mainly ornamental species (seed germination, vegetative propagation and in vitro embryo recovery);
  • protocols for the conservation, micropropagation and induction of callus in rare and/or endemic herbaceous and shrubby species of the Alpine range or in danger of extinction of sub-Saharan origin;
  • conservation of Cannabis sativa L. plant material of commercial interest for medical use.
