Call for participation

We invite applications for the Spring School on Language Variation which will take place on 15-17 May 2023 in Bologna, Italy. 

The School is organized by the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (LILEC) and by the Department of Classical Philology and Italian Studies (FICLIT) of the University of Bologna with the support of the Experimental Lab of the LILEC Department. 

 

The School on Language Variation aims to provide an interactive forum for Ph.D. students and MA students who are looking to advance their skills and knowledge within the field of linguistics.

More specifically, the school aims at fostering a theoretical and practical reflection on language variation from different perspectives in order to discuss how and why languages change. The Spring School consists of 6 lectures (3h each) given by world-renowned scholars:

  • Language variation and language use - Holger Diessel (University of Jena)
  • Language variation and interactional linguistics - Yael Maschler (University of Haifa)
  • Language variation and linguistic structure - Shana Poplack (University of Ottawa)
  • Language variation and emerging changes - Sali A. Tagliamonte (University of Toronto)
  • Language variation and language varieties - Benedikt Szmrecsanyi (KU Leuven) 
  • Language variation and linguistic typology - Natalia Levshina (Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics - Nijmegen) 

Students will receive a Certificate of Attendance at the end of the 6 lectures. However, all the school participants will be invited to attend also the Conference Naturally occurring data in and beyond linguistic typologythat will take place in Bologna right after the School, 18-19 May 2023. 

 

The registration fee is 250 €.

The fee covers the 6 lectures, course material, wifi-connection and participation to the Conference Naturally occurring data in and beyond linguistic typology (18-19 May 2023).

The school will be held in situ and the participation in the school is limited to 30 Ph.D. students and advanced MA students.

  

How to apply 

Applicants should fill out the application form that can be found here.

They will be asked to provide information about their Ph.D. project // MA thesis, in order to prove their experience in the study of linguistic variation. In addition, they are asked to submit a short motivation letter in English (max 2000 characters including spaces). The applications will be assessed by the Scientific Board of the Summer School: the best 30 applications will be admitted.
