The Project

ItaHoneyDNA projects applies DNA analysis techniques to determine the entomological origin of honey. In particular, the project aims to detect honey bee subspecies that produced honey in order to add value to Italian honey identifying the Italian honey bee subspecies Apis mellifera ligustica.

The four actions of ItaHoneyDNA are the following:

1. Mapping and monitoring Apis mellifera mitochondrial lineages distribution in Italy through honey DNA analysis

2. Setting up new lab protocols for honey DNA analysis

3. Valorisation of italian honey with a development of a label reporting the honey bee subspecies information

4. Communication and dissemination activities
